That I have had before / But did not finish, - some way back, / I could not fix the year, / Nor where it went, nor why it came / The second time to me / Nor definitely what it was, / Have I the art to say. / But somewhere in my soul, I know / I've met the thing before; / It just reminded me- 't was all- / And came my way no more. ~Emily Dickinson

They got it wrong...
I guess this is a continuation of my last post. I watched the second part of PBS' Masterpiece Theater version of Wuthering Heights last night. It was only an hour. Combined, they gave 2.5 hours to this majestic book.
They should have skipped it all together. Number One Peeve (I apologize for shouting):
HEATHCLIFF DID NOT SHOOT HIMSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll say that again. Heathcliff did not shoot himself!
And the whole death scene with Cathy...for Pete's sake. They left out the majority of the speeches. Heathcliff and Cathy had a heck of an emotional breakdown/fight before she died. And let's not forget the emotional meltdown she had that started her sickness to begin with.
Some of the best writing of the book was left out. It was horrible. Made me think I was losing my mind, that I didn't remember the story as well as I thought (hah, I've read it so much in English I can - and have - read it in Spanish!) . So I pulled out my time-worn copy, and followed along. Yep. They left out a whole lot of the emotional, twisted, heart-wrenching speeches between Cathy and Heathcliff.
And the whole scene where Edgar runs into Isabella? Puh-leeze. NEVER HAPPENED. One of my favorite scenes in the book is when she bursts into the kitches at the Grange shortly after Cathy dies, and relates how she ran away from Heathcliff, etc. Fabulous stuff.
They left out a majority of the wild, obsessive, mental distraught/deranged verbiage between Cathy & Heathcliff. Made it look like, gee, Cathy got sick and died, not that in a fit of pique and stubborness and revenge she WILLED herself to die. Read chapters 11 - 16.
I am soooooooo disappointed in PBS & Masterpiece Theater. What a hack job. All in all, they get a big fat F from me.
