Twenty Three Years Isn't a Bad Record

This past Saturday I had my first auto accident. No one was hurt; although my car did suffer some damage.

I was driving to a rock climbing comp about 4 hours away, with my little and her mom in the car. For once, we actually left on time, with 5 hours until the comp started. A Spring snow storm had come through the night before, but the roads were great. Until we got about 1.5 hours from here, and got onto the interstate.

The roads didn't look bad; just like there was snow on them. I was going the speed limit when I decided to move into the left lane because it was clear and the right lane had snow. As soon as we changed lanes, I felt the car start to slide. I turned the wheel a bit to the right to keep us in our lane and from going into the median and then oncoming traffic. Not sure if that was a mistake as we went into a spin. At least I knew enough not to slam on the brakes, and just went with the spin. Because by that point I couldn't do much. At least we didn't roll! The whole thing was surreal.

Nothing Doing

Didn't do much over the weekend. Was rather lazy. Didn't help that the lilacs are blooming. Ugh. It's pretty miserable the few weeks they are in bloom. Darn allergies. This year it's affecting my eyes/head. Minor tension type headache and sore/blurry eyes. Keep wanting to rub them which a) makes it worse and b) messes up my contacts.

Took Leia Saturday morning to the local "Strutt Your Mutt" fundraiser for the Humane Society. Didn't sign up for the walk because I'd forgotten about it until the week before, and with all the rain, wasn't sure I'd want to go. And let's face it. It keeps getting pricier each year. No wonder the turn out is smaller and smaller. Minimum $35 pledge to enter, and they want you to get additional pledges. And that's per person/dog. Not per family. Ughh. Knocks me and Shannon out of the running. I know it's a fundraiser, but I think it knocks a lot of people out of the running.

Anyway. The pet fair was free and I figured it would be good for Leia. Then we went to the farmer's market. She did beautifully with all the people and other dogs. Especially the farmer's market. It was packed. Turned out to be a beautiful morning. Even if the lady with the fantabulous banana nut bread wasn't there.

Sunday afternoon we had quite the storm. Dime sized hail. It even spawned a tornado in the eastern side of the state. Right in downtown Billings. Yikes. No one hurt, thankfully, but definitely some damage!

Last night my two oldest nieces called. Only got to talk for a few minutes, but I really liked that. :)

It's the Dogs Turn

Scully has pneumonia. Seriously. I was really worried Saturday (almost in tears at the vet). But by Sunday afternoon she was much more herself. Took 3 days of antibiotics and a day on st.er.oids and a bronchodilator for her to perk up. Saturday was KT's high school graduation. Long, tedious ceremony. But great to see her graduate! Now to get her into college, since her mom nixed the Navy. I'll have her enrolled by end of summer. Just wait. It snowed Saturday. Yes indeed. Snow on June 6th. Heavy wet stuff. At least the ground was too warm for it to stick or turn icy. Yesterday was clear but cloudy, and a balmy 52*F. Warm enough to open the bedroom window and paint. And dry enough to deal with the waist high grass around the garage & in the "extra" parking space out back. Also managed to edge the front & back yards. All morning today it snowed. Very heavily. Big wet, wet, wet flakes. And the temp dropped to 32*F, windchill around 30*F. Cold enough I ran home at 11 to turn on the heat. My lime tree was already in shock at being repotted. I think this might just do it in...And who knows what'll happen to the veggie garden out at Shanni's. Things were just starting to show. Big Plan is to move the bedroom stuff back in tonight. If the paint smell has dissipated, the bed goes back in too. How lovely it will be to have my living room cleared out!

Sky Dreaming

Sitrep: Gym tonight.
I dreamt I was in Spain last night. Only it was my parents house here in the States. But I know itwas Spain because of the sky. The brightness of the sun, the intensity of the heat. It's how I remember the Spain of my youth, those visits to Abuela & Abuelo, and sundry aunts, uncles, cousins. In my dream it was that sky, that light, that heat that made my brain say "Spain" and not "Florida". As usual, it was a weird dream. Upon arrival, I got to my parents and after greeting my brother and his family, jumped straight into the pool. To the delight of my youngest niece who was in the pool with her mother, my sister. I can still feel how sweet that water was, how refreshing. Then it was time to leave for home. Sigh. And then the sky coming in to work this morning was wonderfully quirky. A weather front dropped around 4-6 inches of heavy wet snow yesterday, along with dropping the temps. I'm out in the east valley area, so it's pretty open between home and work. Driving west, there seemed to be a white wall swallowing the town, topped by a few clouds tinged with the colors of the sunrise. It was like those pictures I've seen of giant dust storms in Australia. Only this was white, tinged gray. Once I turned north, it changed. To the east of me, the sunrise was beautiful. The sun had cleared the snow-covered mountains, highlighting the new dusting of snow on the yellow-brown foothills, with deep green pines poking up all over the place. Little tendrils of fog curled between some of the foothills. But the road I was on seemed to be some kind of arbitrary line that white wall struggled to seep past. As if the very earth on the other side of the pavement was fighting back. I could still see the sunrise to the east, as clear and bright as it should be. As the road curved more to the northwest, the whiteness made headway. Visibility dropped to 1/10th of a mile (for me, anyway) and the sun to the east was a fading memory. Once I made that final turn west, it was all over. I was swallowed whole.

SNOW!

On Mount H? On September 1st??? Un-freakin'-believable. At least, that's what I said to myself (or something reasonably similar) Monday morning as I headed out to my little sister's house for another day of packing. It rained a good part of the day Sunday, with strong winds, and I knew the temps were to drop into the forties that night. But to wake up to snow on the Elkhorns south of my house, and then to turn West and see Mount H with a dusting of snow about 3/4 of the way down... Not. Good. Especially since Michelle'd already called me to let me know that the items already out of the house and securely (or so we thought) wrapped/stored were wet. Apparently the wind Sunday blew plenty of rain in along with knocking out the power. The girls discovered the problem when they went out to dig out the candles. {sigh} So instead of moving furniture out, we struggled in the alternately pouring and drizzling rain, with the temperature at 38*F (wind chill 33*F), to put up two large family-size tents. And then moved everything in there. Ughh. One of the guys that volunteered to help with the heavy stuff got the bottle flu. So me and one male friend that did show up did the heavy lifting. (We kept having to chase away Steve-with-the-Broken-Back and his friend D-just-got-out-of-the-hospital-with-colostomy-bag.) Can I just say Monday was nightmarish. And that was before Shanni got into a fight with me. I was too tired and cranky and cold to exhibit any patience...Oh, man, was that a stressful day. At one point Michelle told Shanni if she hated me so much they'd call BBBS first thing on Tuesday and withdraw from the program. Hah. That shut her up. I took a bag of trash outside after that, and KT came up to me and gave me a hug and whispered "I'm so sorry she's being mean. Don't go away." [g] As if. Shanni ended up apologizing. Later. Much, much later. Me, I'm hanging my head in shame because I just couldn't let it go. By 1pm yesterday, we had two carloads and a truck load of dogs (ok, 2 dogs w/their travel kennels) at my house. The cat and one little dog were in my car. The cat is now hostage in my garage (allergies, can't have her in my house - Sis, stay out of my garage if you ever visit!). The four birds (I took them over on Monday) are happily chirping away in a far corner of the kitchen. The dogs have free reign in the yard and are in doggie heaven...the Golden Retriever & Standard Poodle even fit through the doggie door. Go figure. Her Royal Dogginess is Not Pleased we have company. It's amusing to watch her give the other dogs the "evil eye". And to watch them give Scully a wide berth. I'm not kidding. They all watch her out of the corners of their eyes and if she moves in one direction, they get up and go in the other. So they are all moved in for the duration...Shanni & I are "camped" upstairs, KT is sleeping on the sofa, and Michelle & Steve are in my room...can't have the man with the broken back sleeping on the floor. Their old home is supposedly being moved today, the new one coming in tomorrow. If all goes according to the latest schedule. Our friend Josie stopped by last night with wine. And ended up cooking dinner. I'm not sure how that happened, the girls were supposed to cook dinner (meat loaf) and I swear they started to...I was upstairs cleaning the spare room, and doing laundry so I don't know why Josie ended up cooking. But it was nice not to have to. Poor Steve was passed out on the sofa within minutes of sitting down. Between the TV, the birds (OMG are they noisy), the girls doing "homework", the dryer, the dogs, & us three girls chatting across the house, it was bedlam. Can I just say I was glad to have to return to work this morning? At least it has warmed up, the sun is shining, and the snow on Mount H didn't last past Monday afternoon.

Fay, Fay, Go Away...

Sitrep: 1/2 Lawn Mowed, ~2 mile walk
Talked to the folks - again - this morning. The streets around them are flooded and closed, but so far the cul-de-sac they live on is okay. The sewage system is flooded, though, so that's not much fun. There are water use restrictions from that...limit how much you use, etc. But they have power. My SIL's grandfather is above water as well...at least when she checked on him yesterday. She hadn't called yet this morning when I talked to her. My lunatic sister (yes, lunatic!) went jogging yesterday when the wind/rain let up some. They (sister & bil) were going again this morning. [insert rolling of eyes here] They also went swimming yesterday evening with their 4.5 yr old during a short rain break. Just in case y'all didn't know this, but swimming pools filled with fresh rain water are cold. Just saying. Saw on the weather channel that the Ace Hardware in A1A Plaza put their generators on sale for 30% off yesterday. That's surprising. A nice surprise! Not too much else going on in my world. Crashed big time last night. Two days of running around and socializing until 8pm wears me out. I think I played solitaire for several hours. And did you know that if you shuffle a deck of cards continuously for over an hour you'll see all the Aces pass through the bottom of the deck? Really, you will. Some of them several times over. This morning was Business Plan presentations at work - to the whole office. Fifteen minutes per presentation with a 5 minute Q&A. Glad that's over. Now I get to implement mine, and be "monitored" in my progress. Oh, joy. Not.

Making Dad Laugh

Sitrep: 1/2 Lawn mowed, ~2 mi Walk

So I called my parents this morning to see how they fared with Tropical Storm F.ay, since the eye apparently moved quite s-l-o-o-o-w-l-y over them last night. Dad answered (nice surprise, it's usually Mom & I've talked to her and my sister the last two days.) Considering it was early for me on a work day, Dad should have been surprised it was me. But since I've called 2 days in a row to check on them...not so much. Really it's just an excuse to call! And yesterday I figured was the best chance to catch my sister not in the pool! But when I started with "The weather channel reported 51 tornadoes in [ ] county, are you guys ok?" Dad couldn't help but laugh. A real belly laugh. I think I really tickled his funny bone. Turns out it was one tornado, with 51 homes damaged. And not near them. My poor beleaguered brain apparently condensed the report and scrambled it about a bit. [g] But hey, at least I made my Dad laugh! I think it's quite humorous that they've had no tropical weather this season until the week my sister visits with her family. Lucky them - trapped for 2 days in the house with a 4 and a half year old who lives to swim. [g] While on the phone my BIL in the background hollered "Send snorkels!" LOL. So far all's well at the house. Streets around the neighborhood that flood with regular rainfall are flooded. But nothing beyond that. The last few days have been busy for me. But finally our 2-day annual seminar for a local company is over and the instructor in on his way home. Had to do the hostess thing the last 2 days, and eat out. Bummer. Last night we walked from the downtown hotel he stayed at & up to the walking mall and a local eatery that used to be a brothel. Big Dorothy's. [g] Good steaks and fun atmosphere. It's about a mile from the hotel one way. The weather cooled down considerably, and it sprinkled a bit. But it was a nice walk. On the way back we got ice cream. It's a good thing we walked! Saw the chiropractor again today for a status check. All looks good. A few more adjustments today and that's that unless I'm in pain again. He told me again not to baby my right hip for that arthritis, to keep moving so it stays lubricated. Which I'm doing. Sort of. :) I have got to get back into REVing. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Just a lot of hips and butt. [groan, I know]. Oh, and I'm buying a new (to me) camera. It's a smaller digital camera I've been wanting. Not quite a pocket point and shoot, but smaller by quite a bit than my digital SLR, and with a really good optical zoom. It's going to be my "around-town" camera. One I can carry with me and not worry about leaving in the trunk of the car. Not like my "baby", my D SLR. [g]

Today's the Day: ROAD TRIP!

Goal: 3x Arms & Abs, Gym Night
Sitrep: 2x Arms, 2x Abs, 20 min Basketball (Gym Night)

The dog woke me up at exactly 3:21 this morning. She was very insistent on not only sleeping in the bed, but in also getting under the covers. Considering she hasn't slept in the bed for several weeks, I was a little surprised. Until it dawned on me that it was pretty cold in the bedroom. Colder than it should have been with the electric baseboard heater on. Then I realized there was no red glow coming from my nightstand alarm clock. Uh-oh. Looked outside, and lo and behold, there's at least 3 inches of snow covering everything. And I could tell it was the very heavy wet stuff. The wind must have been blowing pretty hard as well, because there was quite a bit of snow stuck to the window, which is unusual!

I called the power company's outage line, and the recording indicated crews had already been dispatched. I made the rounds of the house turning faucets on so the pipes wouldn't freeze, and turned the thermostat up on the direct vent furnace in the living room. Good thing I didn't listen to that idiot salesman and stuck to my guns on getting the furnace that doesn't have to have electricity to run. ["Oh, the power never goes out in E.H." - rolling eyes]

You know something? It's not a good sign when the power company truck rolls slowly down your street shining a light along the power lines checking for the downed line. [g] Power was out until about 6:30 am.

And today is the day we drive down to Butte for the Ma.nsfield-Metcal.f Dinner featuring Oba.ma and Cli.nton. It should be fun, but the roads aren't going to be! My coworker in Butte already called and suggested we leave at least an hour earlier than we'd planned because it's still snowing there; quite heavily, in fact. At least they've lifted the restriction on wearing coats tonight. They were saying absolutely no coats as recently as yesterday. This morning they said it's too cold to do that. I'm still planning on dressing in layers!

I've got my camera ready to go. Brief scare last night when I couldn't find my 75-300mm zoom lens, spent over an hour tearing the house apart, even searched the car! Turns out I left it at my little sister's house. So now I have to race out to the valley to get it today before meeting up with my friends to drive to Butte. I'm taking a little notebook with me to write down any notes/my thoughts. I'm sure I'll be posting about it here. It might take me a few days to percolate my thoughts, though!

Negative Numbers

Shouldn't be a good thing. But ya know, sometimes they are. I'm loving the current cold temps we're finally seeing. It was -20*F this morning when I got up to get ready for work. Yes, that's the actual temp, not the windchill. The wind died down a bit, so the windchill equaled the air temp for awhile, anyway.

We got about 9 inches of snow between Friday and Sunday morning. Most of it Saturday evening & overnight. Spent about 40 minutes shoveling snow yesterday morning, and another 30 minutes in the afternoon helping my neighbor dig out her car. The snow plow came down our road and completely blocked all the cars in. Nice of them, no? It was fairly deep in the back where I park in the garage, but I was able to get my car out, up to the main road, and then back again. Much more snow and I won't be able to. I'm seriously thinking my tax refund (if there's enough) should go toward a snowblower. It would make life a little simpler, I think. Or maybe I should hire someone with a snow shovel on the front of their truck to come clear my drive...I'll have to think about that one.

Books...I haven't talked about books much lately. Read a fun one last week "Agnes and the Hitman" by Jennifer Crusie & Bob Mayer. It's their second book together, and I enjoyed it more than the first. It was pretty funny. Quirky & unusual. I'm not sure how I feel about liking a hero that really was a hitman. The heroine and her anger issues was fresh. Normally the heroine is so "perfect". I could totally relate to the anger thing...I've had probs with that in the past. Not to the degree the heroine did. But I found her mental conversations with herself hilarious. Normally I don't like small southern towns with tons of quirky characters, but somehow they pulled this one off. I'd recommend it for a fun, light read.

I'm currently reading "Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker. It's interesting. But he's very wordy. I wish he'd cut a lot out and get to the point more. Feels like every other page is a new acronym of stages/signs, etc. Very good info, just hard for me to read and stay focused on.

Other than that, not much else going on. Oh. The ruling party in Paraguay has actually nominated a female to run for President. Who'd a thunk it? ;)

I'm trying to ignore the US political races going on. I'm tired of the endless debates over nothing, and whether or not I should vote for someone based on their race, sex or religion. At this point, I'd rather vote for a Martian...
